The
most spectacular botanical discovery in a very long time. It's quite
remarkable to think that this one solitary species, growing in open
woodland and rainforest, on the slopes of an eroded granite range,
amongst boulders, and at an altitude of 60 to 400m just near Cooktown,
Australia, was able to remain undiscovered until late into the 20th
Century.
The
Foxtail's trunk is smooth and closely ringed. Its stem has a slight
and gradual bottle neck bulge midway. It is topped with a narrower
green crown- shaft covered in creamy-green bloom.
The
leaves, with their very narrow individual leaflets, are arranged
in a circular plume. The Foxtail's green inflorescence is borne
on a thick stem emerging from below the crownshaft. The oval shaped
fruits which emerge from the creamy-green bloom turn orange red
at maturity forming an attractive display. Fruits are a large oval
shape measuring 3.5cm x 5.5cm (1.25" x 2.25") and produce the palm's
seed.
